Mythbusters: Unravelling the pollutant uptake processes in mosses for air quality biomonitoring

چکیده

Terrestrial mosses have been used for more than 50 years to monitor air pollution. We argue, however, that their value as biomonitors is based on two widespread but partially erroneous assumptions concerning morphological structure (the structural myth) and physicochemical characteristics myth). The myth consists of the oversimplification moss structure. recognizes high cation exchange capacity (CEC) only pathway pollutant uptake. Here, we gather discuss evidence demonstrating these are misleading focus discussion aspects make good First, show plants (i) do a cuticle, whose composition differs among species, (ii) can epidermal cells, differ in shape thickness from other cell types, (iii) vascular system, degree development lineage- species-specific, (iv) rhizoids, absorb water, nutrients pollutants. effect traits uptake processes has understudied biomonitoring studies. Second, not concentrate much pollutants they could according CEC, retain large amounts particles containing atmospheric surfaces, many contexts, spatial concentrations depicts pattern expected atmospherically deposited particles. Thus, quality organisms pollution also lies call research how physiological affect dynamics recommend researchers using face critically inaccurate or insufficiently demonstrated this context.

Recent Development of VUV-Based Processes for Air Pollutant Degradation

As air pollution poses a great challenge around the globe, it is essential to fashion out a way of efficiently degrading the air pollutants. Vacuum Ultraviolet (VUV)-based processes are an emerging and promising technology for environmental remediation such as air cleaning, wastewater treatment, and air/water disinfection. When VUV irradiation, photolysis, photocatalysis, and ozone-assisted oxi...

Accumulation of heavy metals in mosses: a biomonitoring study

The metropolitan area of the Toluca Valley (MATV) extends over an area of 1208.55 km(2) and has 1,361,500 inhabitants making it the fifth highest populated area in the country and the second highest in the state. The MATV has several environmental problems, with regards to the air quality. Particles PM10 and PM2.5 are considered to be the main pollutant due to these particles frequently exceedi...

Physiological Evaluation of Apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) Leaves to Air Pollution for Biomonitoring of Atmospheric Quality

Industrialization releases significant amounts of various air pollutants such as F, Cd, Pb, particulate matter, etc., which can in turn have a deleterious effect on a variety of biochemical and physiological processes as well as the structural organization within the cells. Responses from plants species to air pollutants is varied with certain species being very sensitive to such pollutants, en...

Air quality and trace elements biomonitoring in Tehran urban areas using epiphytic lichen

Background and Objective: Air quality and distribution of trace elements in the Tehran metropolis were evaluated using transplants of the epiphytic lichen Ramalina sinensis. Materials and Methods: Thalli of R. sinensis were collected from a non-contaminated area and transplanted in the six urban sites of Tehran for six months. After the end of the exposure period, the content of twelve element...
